Place the base firmly on the reference surface, making sure it fits tightly without tilting. Then, slowly lower the measuring probe (or rod) into the depth to be measured until it touches the bottom steadily—avoid applying excessive force to prevent deformation of the probe or workpiece. Finally, read the value after the pointer (for analog gauges) or digital display stabilizes.
